Outspoken Lake County Sheriff’s Office critic Terry Leonard was served a search warrant Thursday afternoon by the very department he claims is corrupt.
“It’s a bullying tactic,” Leonard said Friday afternoon.
The 2 p.m. search of his Polson residence resulted in the seizure of computers, electronic storage devices and printed e-mails, Lake County Attorney Mitch Young said.
“It is an ongoing investigation,” he said. “I can’t go into any specifics at this time.”
Young would not reveal potential charges, which have yet to be filed, but Leonard confirmed he might be charged with criminal defamation, a misdemeanor.
“If they want to go to court, I’m more than happy to go to court,” Leonard said. “I have lawyers telling me I have a case against the county.”
Detective Rick Lenz of the sheriff’s office could not comment on any specifics, other than to confirm the search.
Leonard has run advertisements in the Lake County Leader and runs the website http://www.asksheriffluckylarson.com/ .
The “ask your sheriff” website claims to want to “restore integrity to the Office of Lake County Sheriff,” and encourages citizens to ask Sheriff Lucky Larson and Undersheriff Jay Doyle about “misappropriated mil-levy money,” “SRT T-shirts condoning violence/death/gore,” and “missing/stolen ammunition,” among other things.
“The website and ads were run for the sole intent of educating the public on a lot of corruption going on in the sheriff’s office of Lake County,” Terry Leonard said.
Terry Leonard, who was a reserve deputy for six years before becoming a full-time deputy in October 2009, was fired from the department in February 2010, he said.
Terry Leonard claims that corruption is rampant in the office, yet law enforcement officers are scared to speak out due to fear of repercussions.
“Nobody could say anything because they are afraid of losing their jobs,” he said. “I’m going to come under fire no matter what because I’m a whistleblower.
But I’ve said from the beginning, I’ll take the heat.”
Terry Leonard is also is the subject of an investigation by the State Commission of Political Practices.
A complaint filed by Lanny VanMeter, treasurer of the Jay Doyle for Sheriff campaign, alleges that Terry Leonard violated campaign laws and is operating an illegal political action committee with independent sheriff candidate Steven Kendley.
Both Leonard and Kendley have denied any affiliation and Leonard claims his site is not intended to influence the Nov. 2 general election.
“I don’t care who becomes sheriff, as long as they are honorable,” he said. “This isn’t going to stop after the election. It’s going to be a watchdog for this county to maintain accountability in the sheriff’s office.”

When is it appropriate to suspend a sentence?
There are many factors that must be looked at when you hand down a suspended sentence. Among these are the individual’s criminal background, the support system that he/she has within the community, ties to the community, employment and familial obligations. Suspended sentences are used as a tool to ensure that someone complies with the order of the court. For example, you may suspend a jail sentence provided they pay a fine and enroll and complete treatment. It is definitely appropriate to suspend a jail sentence if the defendant is employed, is a single parent or is attending inpatient treatment.
Living in a small community, how would you handle cases that involve your family, friends or acquaintances?
Cases involving family are never handled by the relative judge. Another judge in the county must be brought in as a substitute. As for friends, to avoid any indication of impropriety you must call in another judge from the county. I have done just that over the last 3-1/2 years. The best way to handle acquaintance situations is to ask the person if they would like you to recuse yourself and proceed accordingly. Whether friend, family member of another judge, acquaintance or stranger, I will continue to ensure that all understand the charges that have been brought against them; will make certain that there is a factual basis for a guilty plea pursuant to MCA 46-12-212(1) and if not will appoint the Office of Public Defender to represent them in the matter should they qualify. I will not simply accept any guilty plea just to close a case. ""

I am writing this letter on memorial day, a day to celebrate our freedom as a nation . On Tue. June 8, we have a primary election for Sheriff of Ravalli county. This is one of the most important races any of us can vote in. Whoever becomes our next Sheriff will determine how much freedom and civil rights we will have here in this county.
For the last 12 years we have had outrage after outrage, 1/2 pound of cocaine missing from evidence room, jail suicides, deputies using the Sheriff's computer to access pornography,wife beating drunks hired to police us.Thousands of dollars worth of ammunition stolen right under the Sheriff's nose.
Citizens complaints thrown in the waste basket and never an answer. Its almost impossible to get a copy of a police report with out endless red tape.and endless waiting. We must change things in Ravalli county.
We need professional law enforcement in Ravalli County. I am voting for Joede Vanek a tried and true police professional with 20 years experience and advanced training who can inspire and teach our deputies to be professional peace officers.
When you dial 911 who do you want to show up, a bully with a badge and a gun or a professional well trained peace officer? Its your choice.
